How to keep your home cool without air-conditioning

There's nothing quite as refreshing as retreating indoors to an air-conditioned house on a scorching hot day. However installing a ducted air-conditioning system can be quite a complex process and using it on a regular basis can lead to a dramatic spike in your energy bills in the long-term. Here are a few ways that you can keep your home cool and comfortable without the use of AC.

Opt for casement windows

This style of window, which features two sash panes that are hinged on the sides of the frame, is an ideal choice for those living in hot climates. Unlike sliding or double hung designs, casement windows enable you to fully open both panes of glass simultaneously, thus allowing the maximum amount of air to flow in through the property.

This additional ventilation can make a significant difference to the overall temperature in your home, eliminating the need for portable fans and AC units. As such, the initial costs involved in installing this type of window should be viewed as an investment which will save you money (in the form of lower energy bills) in the long run.

Add shade to the exterior of your home

If your property includes a garden, it might be helpful to create shade outside the windows which receive the most amount of sun. There are several different ways to go about doing this, but the most common options are planting a large tree or installing an awning.  When a tree is in full bloom, its leaves can block out a considerable amount of the sun's heat. If the layout of your outdoor space doesn't allow for the planting of a tree, an awning is an excellent alternative, which will not only protect your house from the heat but can also add to its overall kerb appeal.

Be wary of internal heat sources

Kitchen appliances, televisions, light bulbs, computers and other electrical items all produce heat. When several of them are used at once, the heat generated can have a significant effect on the temperature in your house, making it uncomfortably clammy on a hot day. Whilst it's impossible to avoid using these devices entirely, it is a good idea to be aware of your usage and try to switch things off when they are not needed. It's far too common for people to leave their laptop running or the television switched on in the background whilst they do other activities. Remembering to turn them off will not only help to keep your home cooler but will also reduce your energy bills.
